Keeping It Real: Mathematical Modeling and Statistical
Analysis
in the Classroom
Human beings are pattern seekers, and much of science and applied mathematics centers on determining and interpreting existing patterns. Learners remember and internalize content most effectively when it is organized and connected to experience. This workshop will respond to both facts. It will offer ideas for applying mathematical modeling (patterns of mathematical structure) and statistical analysis principles in existing curricula. The modeling will be implemented through the transformation of readily available data (real-world experience) into usable information. Participants will have the opportunity to explore existing lessons and to create lessons for use in their own classrooms.
- Instructor: S. Marie Cooper, Ed.D.
- Target Audience: Middle and High School Mathematics Teachers
Integrating Problem Solving into Your Classroom
Would you like to have a more active mathematics classroom? Can you believe that your students will be asking for more and more problems to solve? It is possible if you use the right approach. Instructors are often hesitant to give students problems that require creativity to solve. They worry that their students will be frustrated and discouraged by problems that are too difficult or confusing. Teachers themselves are intimidated by the problems, and they can pass this fear on to their students. This does not have to be the case. When students are regularly presented creative math problems, and are given the freedom to explore and solve the problems at their own pace, they learn to enjoy math and become better problem solvers in the process.
- Instructor: Molli R. Jones, Ph.D.
- Target Audience: Middle and High School Mathematics Teachers
Using the Alice Programming System to Apply Mathematics
Did you ever wonder if it was possible to engage your students and inspire a curiosity for mathematics by tapping into their imaginations?
This workshop will use the Alice programming system to:
- Introduce you to the Alice programming system environment
- Teach you the basics of Alice programming
- Demonstrate how you can apply mathematics when creating a 3D animation
- Initiate discussion regarding approaches for integrating activities into you mathematics classroom
- Instructor: Mary Elizabeth “M.E.” Jones, Ph.D.
- Target Audience: Middle and High School Mathematics
