Course Description: This course will focus on incorporating student-generated topics into middle and secondary mathematics curricula as a means to achieving state and district standards and learning outcomes. Teachers will explore ways to integrate mathematics across a full spectrum of the curriculum, including the fine arts and vocational/technical arts. Emphasis will be on student inquiry into personal interests to generate and manipulate data. Differentiated instruction techniques will be implemented as a means to these ends. A key facet will be facilitating student engagement by experimenting with the aspects of mathematics that do NOT make sense to the student. Applications will include inclusion/co-teaching situations, utilization of teacher support of process over content, and Marzano’s high-yield-strategies.
