At Ease with Es: Using the Five Es for Inquiry-Based Exploration of the Ecosystem Embedded with Mathematics
COURSE CLOSED Course Description: In this course teachers will be engaged in inquiry-based ecosystem labs/activities using materials from AIMS (Activities Integrating Math and Science), GEMS (Great Explorations in Math and Science), SCIMAST (Eisenhower Southwest Consortium for the Improvement of Mathematics and Science Teaching) and Sheltered Instruction in the Middle School [addressing the needs of English Language Learners (ELL)]. All of the constructivist activities will incorporate the 5-E learning model (Engage, Explore, Explain, Extend, and Evaluate) for the scientific process while simultaneously incorporating fourth and fifth grade mathematics concepts and skills. Additionally, teachers will learn science and mathematics teaching strategies that support ELL students, and address issues of teaching in a diverse classroom. Teachers, in turn, will be equipped with the materials necessary to lead their own classes in the integrated science and math labs. A single-day follow-up session in October will provide teachers long-term support for implementing materials practiced in the summer into their own curricula while participating in more of the integrated science and math labs. Addresses Pennsylvania Department of Education Academic Standards for: Science and Technology: 3.1 Unifying Themes; >3.2 Inquiry and Design; >4.1 Watersheds and Wetlands; >4.2 Renewable and Nonrenewable Resources; >4.3 Environmental Health; >4.6 Ecosystems and their Interactions; >4.7 Threatened, Endangered and Extinct Species Mathematics: >2.1 Numbers, Number Systems and Number Relationships; >2.2 Computation and Estimation; >2.3 Measurement and Estimation; >2.4 Mathematical Reasoning and Connections; >2.5 Mathematical Problem Solving and Communication; >2.6 Statistics and Data Analysis; >2.8 Algebra and Functions; >2.9 Geometry.
