Course Description: This course will provide secondary school mathematics and computer teachers (grades 8-10) with the tools to strengthen students’ mathematical and problem solving skills, logical reasoning, abstract thinking, and creativity through story animation. Participants will create three-dimensional animated stories using the “Alice” programming language (www.alice.org) and will learn how to use the programming language and environment as a way to teach algebra and geometry concepts. Through the software design and implementation processes participants will use mathematics, logic and abstraction to create their animation. In addition, a session will be devoted to demonstrating how this knowledge can be implemented in a classroom. The course will consist of interactive lectures, demonstrations, and computer lab work.

As part of the course, each participant will create a sample lesson plan for use in individual classrooms. Lesson plans will be collated and distributed to all participants. After completion of the course, participants will be able to consult the coordinators regarding the use of Alice in their classrooms.
