Investigation of Cardiovascular Physiology at the Organismal, Cellular, and Molecular Level
COURSE CLOSED Course Description: This course will use an inquiry-based approach to explore cardiovascular physiology at the organismal, cellular, and molecular level. Participants will strengthen their understanding of the cardiovascular system while utilizing current, student-centered instructional technologies. The latest software and online resources will be utilized for instruction, along with the use of molecular laboratory techniques including protein and DNA gel electrophoresis of hemoglobin and cholesterol genes. Experimental methodologies will reinforce important cardiovascular physiology concepts as well as emphasize the impact of disease on normal function. Ideas for implementation in a secondary school science class will be shared. Participant Take-Home Kits: After completion of the course, students will receive a kit for gel electrophoresis and a password to access biology labs online in their classroom. Participating students may borrow laboratory equipment necessary to carry out the learned experiments at their own schools. Addresses Pennsylvania Department of Education Academic Standards for Science & Technology: 3.2 Inquiry and Design; 3.3 Biological Sciences; 3.7 Technological Devices. Limited to 10 participants.
