Description: This course will highlight the use of analytical methods for studying our environment. Projects will include: 1) spectrophotometric analysis of food colors, 2) gas chromatographic analysis of fuel components, 3) FT-IR identification of plastics, 4) High Performance Liquid Chromatography of hydrocarbons in the water supply, 5) water quality analysis using take-home kits, 6) phytoremediation: removal of zinc from a water source, and 7) determining aluminum concentration in natural water. Each participant will rotate through all seven projects during the 3-day course.
