SEPCHE Institute for Mathematics and Science
Overview
The SEPCHE Institute for Mathematics and Science, established in 2001 through a grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, is focused on preparing the next generation of leaders in the two most critical fields of world competitiveness, mathematics and science. The Institute is a concept that is dynamic and collaborative in nature rather than a physical location with each SEPCHE college or university identifying the areas of strength in science, science education, mathematics and mathematics education that will be its contribution to this collaborative Institute. The Institute's efforts are directed towards to advancing math and science literacy and accomplishment in the regions college and K-12 institutions, and ensuring that faculty are teaching and students are learning with state of the art equipment and methodologies. Establishment of the Institute extends the historic partnership between the five-county public and private schools, business community, and SEPCHE.
Summer Courses for Teachers
Never has it been more critical than the present time to make sure that American students can function at the highest levels in mathematics and science and maintain the nation’s leadership role in the development and applications of technology. SEPCHE, as part of its commitment to promoting high quality teaching and advancing student achievement in all areas, has provided ongoing in-service support that teachers need to remain up to date by offering at no charge a series of graduate level courses for teachers of mathematics and science in the summers of 2002 and 2003. The courses were designed as part of the collaborative effort of the SEPCHE colleges and universities to continue to address new and important pedagogies involving state of the art technology in mathematics and science and to present them to teachers in the Greater Philadelphia Area.
